pickins was slim for me this yr.: 1. jackass--never laughed so hard for so long. when they set off the fireworks in that dude's parents' bedroom, people in the theater were literally falling out of their seats. 2. lord of the rings 2--there's some stuff that didn't really make sense, and I could care less about the flashbacks to the love story that i slept through in the first one, but the last 1/3 is genuinely breathtaking. 3. ice age--very funny movie, bookended by two shorts of this prehistoric squirrel chasing an acorn that me laughing so hard, tears were coming down my face. 4. road to perdition--looked great, obviously, but ultimately compromises in the last 1/3 all the tension and interest set up in the first 2/3. 5. undercover brother--kind of like a dumb saturday night live skit writ large, but eddie griffin is still one of the best comic actors going. and dave chapelle as conspiracy brother is the bomb-diggity. 6. gangs of ny--i guess i admire the ambition, and i'm a history buff, so i could just sit and enjoy the historical recreation for about an hour and a half, but ultimately, it's a spectacular failure. dan is right to point out that story is important, and i also fancy motivations driving characters' actions. such motivations, to the extent that they are intelligible (or even exist at all), aren't really logical. daniel day lewis is out of control, though, and should win the oscar. hope he doesn't go back to making shoes in italy. 7. big fat greek wedding--saw it on the plane back from Mexico City......fell asleep. |
