The long drive from Phoenix to San Diego included a lunch stop at Chick-Fil-A and an afternoon gas & Slurpee stop at 7-11. You can't ask for more from a road trip. The intimidating exterior to Petco Park held the promise of an exciting Clemens / Peavy matchup.
YouthLarge and ListMaker turn from their outfield seats to look at one of the many monitors placed around the stadium.
From just outside the team store a fan watches the game and checks his fantasy baseball team.
Is wiffleball for kids only?
When I move to San Diego I'm buying a picnic basket.
Doing so might cut down on my hot dog consumption. Oddly, I remain intense and focused for my fifth tubesteak of the trip.
He's smart because he reads whatever he can get his hands on.
I told you there were a lot of monitors around the ballpark.
The Padres win and the fans go crazy!
Jamie wears the spoils of a previous baseball trip.
At long last, post-game drinks.
Day six means an early afternoon trip to Ocean Beach where the group huddles, finds parking and heads to a restaurant on a very long pier.
This photo was taken to prove that the group was actually in Ocean Beach.
This photo was taken as a reminder to upgrade to an 8 megapixel camera.
There's lunch. And it means all the discussion of fish tacos can end.
Listmaker takes one last bite before pulling out pen and paper to write down the exciting new brand of malt vinegar offered by the restaurant.
The kids love the dog beach.
The fans assemble outside Petco Park for the second Padres game in as many days.
In some circles this is referred to as "freestyle walking." It's sort of like freestyle skateboarding but without a skateboard. During the previous night's game I'd seen a few kids taking part in this activity and when I had the opportunity to try, I made sure that all the cameras were out. This was perhaps my second greatest athletic feat of the trip. In Phoenix Jamie and I had an underwater swimming race and I beat him by a few meters. Luckily I neither drown nor fell flat on my face.
Perhaps the stadium is so large in order to incorporate the towering images of the ballplayers presented before the start of the game?
Two of the most delicate and beautiful structures known to man - the purple roofdeck flower and the towering condo development crane.
On day 6 I substituted andouille sausage for a hot dog. It doesn't count, does it?
Youthlarge threw sunflower seeds at my beard.
Ahh, how lovely.
When t he group stops to pick up Slurpees and beer. Listmaker and Youthlarge continue reading the day's news.
