Day two started with a hike in Runyon Canyon. As much as I'd like to think the two guys behind Dave and Jen are Jamie and and Handwashings, they're not. And they're not Kevin Smith's wife, either. Although, she did hike Runyon that same day.
Traveling to LA was good for me. I feel like I have a tiny hint of the geography of the city now. While there I saw only a few neighborhoods and didn't manage to get into a traffic jam on every highway (freeway?), but I now realize downtown is sort of far away from Hollywood.
Notice that Listmaker shaved his moustache before making the baseball trip.
It's tough to resist taking a photo of that Hollywood sign. It's also tough staring down at all the nice houses, looking at the pools and wondering just how I can get invited to visit and take a dip.
Imagine that day two of the trip is a day of self-portraits for me. And now be happy that I've spared showing you self-portrait number one, which showcased too much beard and way too much sweat. After finishing a bottle of water and making a voice recording for an eventual podcast, I started to relax. At the top of the hill, I thought it necessary to throw my backpack over my shoulder and take a photo - a photo of a man who felt like he'd accomplished something. If I ever post a photo of you on my website and you think you look awful, I refer you to this photo where not only is the massiveness of my belly apparent, but my lack of fashion sense dominates the photos (green on green???).
Walking down the hill is so much easier! Jen, Dave and Ella (the dog) confirm they've got a good lunch suggestion in mind.
In theory, everyone taking a photo of the Hollywood sign is a nice idea, but everyone prefers taking a photo of the "caution rattlesnakes" sign. (see HW & LM)
Having escaped the wrath of the rattlesnakes (and not having thought about mountain lions yet), the group went to Zankou Chicken for lunch.
Look at those palm trees! How does anyone do any work in Los Angeles? After a filling lunch, there's no desire to do anything in a hurry. But there was a minor league game in Adelanto, CA that needed to be seen so the minivan headed east.
The trip toward Barstow was filled with traffic. The traffic reached especially heavy levels when we appeared to be leaving civilization (Can't you see parts of E.T. being filmed in the scene above?). Housing developments appeared out of nowhere - some in mid-construction stages with only foundations and lampposts in place. A telephone call confirmed that we'd be passing that day's venue for Ozzfest very soon.
See - it really was self-portrait day. This time I try to get creative just a few miles from Adelanto.
And then I reverted to standard self-portrait mode, if only to show off the clear skies.
When looking at this photo, I like to pretend Handwashings is looking at something and someone else is holding the camera and photographing the field.
I'm not going for accuracy in reporting here, but let's pretend the center fielder is the In N Out Double Double player of the game. If he'd managed to hit a double while at bat, everyone in the stands would've gotten a free Double Double burger from everyone's favorite fast food chain.

Self-portrait with Hot Dog.

There's a slightly crazed look in my eye. A look that says "I'm going all the way with this. I'm going to have a hot dog at every baseball game during the trip."

Listmaker disapproves.
Baseball, baseball, baseball.
Kids love running the bases!
Adults love posing for group photos!
The tease of winning a free double-double led us to the In-N-Out burger in Barstow. It was late at night.
